Hace pocos días, y tras 7 años de lucha contra el cáncer, fallece uno de los grandes de la alta costura internacional, Oscar de la Renta. Nacido en República Dominicana en 1932, a sus 18 años se trasladó a Madrid, dónde fue discípulo de Balenciaga y dónde, sin duda, comenzaría una exitosa carrera en el mundo de la moda. Trabajó después para Antonio del Castillo, entonces director creativo de Lanvin en París, y en los años 60 decidió afincarse en NYC. Su bagaje latinoamericano, su influencia Europea y su acercamiento por vestir a la mujer norteamericana han hecho de su estilo uno muy característico y personal. Cuando ves uno de sus vestidos, sabes que es un Oscar de la Renta.

De la Renta ha dejado huella en el corazón y el closet de infinidad de mujeres que buscaban sentirse elegantes y bellas, que es justamente cómo Oscar sabía hacerlas sentir. «Sabes que has acertado con un diseño cuando primero miran a la mujer y luego al vestido», decía este genio de los patrones.

Un genio que se dio a conocer mediáticamente cuándo vistió a la primera dama Jackie Kennedy, así como a Audrey Hepburn, otro de los iconos del momento. Pero los rumores dicen que no fue con Jackie si no con Hillary Clinton con quién el diseñador entabló una especial relación. Cuentan la anécdota que se conocieron en un acto en el que ambos estaban invitados, y ella había escogido un vestido suyo sin él saberlo.
